Personal culture in comparison with American culture - Korean food and American food
While I chose the topic of this final project and I was thinking about what would be the most
interesting way to show diversty of culture. And when we compared two different culture like
wesern and eastern, although there can be many ways like movie, music or costoms but I thought
that food is the most interesting and common way to everyone. And that's why I chose this
subject. And in my case I have been also having a hard times with big change of food and I think
two different food culture means not only just eating different things but also different lifestyle or
different sense of value. So I think comparing foods from two different culture can be a good way
to understand other culture.
First of all, while I was in Korea I could eat everything well and I didn't have any problems with food.
Actully I didn't even thought about food. Of course I knew that if I went to America my food life will
be totally different but I didn't take it that seriously. But I came to America and having hamburger
or frozen pizza everyday was quite tough. As you know already in America it's kind of limited that
you can buy food with low price. you have to choose fast food with no choice. I'm a forien student
so I usually eat frozen pizza or another fast food to save some money but sometimes I'm really
worried about my health like am I gonna be okey with these food. So I often enjoy some vegetables
and protains in Japanese or Chinese restaurant. I think expensive foods are all good and healthy no
matter where they are from. But I think low price food that common people normaly eat is much
more important then expensive food to represent their culture. In America there are so many fast
food like hamburger, hot dog, fried chicken.
And I think they came from the idea of having things
fast and conviniently. In Korea they also have their own fast food called Boon-Shic. It's not as fast
as American fast food but it's quite okey with health concerns then American's. In Korea compared
to America, they have more choices with low price I think. Among the Korean's most favorites
there's Miso-soup and Soft-Tofu soup.
It's price is only $4 but there's all kinds of vegetables, tofus,
mushrooms, and some sea foods in it. And rice comes with it. I went to some nice restaurant in
downtown and I orderd a hamburger and it's really different from Macdonald's or other local
hamburger shop. It was just so nice and seems like not bad to health at all. So I Thought this is why
there's so many fat people among poor people then rich people. I think it's because a vegetable
salad costs more than a Big Mac meal.
I think trying other country's food is fun and it's definently good way to learning other culture.
Interview
What's your name? Terry
Have you ever tried Korean food? If you have how was it? Yes, I like Bul-GoGi a lot.
How do you think of vegeterians? I think they are OK, but it bothers me when they criticize meat-eaters.
Do you think is there any relationship between food and persnality? Yes. Big relationship
Like how? Usually people who are picky about food are also picky about other things while others are dare and not afraid to try new things. I think people who refuse to eat somethig not familiar are not open-minded to other cultures.
What is your favorite food of all time? hmm.. a tough one, spagetti with a lot of Italian sausages.
